Abstract

Nestor Kuzmich has permanently entered the history of the Orthodox Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the1590s, Nestor Kuźmicz participated in councils where important matters of the Orthodox Church were discussed. On October 6, 1596, he was elected to chair the deliberations of the Orthodox camp at the Council in Brest. Protopop of Zabludov signed up to its provisions. After the Brest Union, Nestor Kuzmich belonged to the defenders of the rights of the Orthodox Church. In 1609, the priest was awarded the title of exarch of the Kiev metropolis by the patriarch. On January 4, 1609, he issued a message to the clergy and faithful of the “Greek faith, “in which he appealed not to recognise Hipacy Pociej as their superior and to defend the rights of the Orthodox Church. Nestor Kuzmich died in Zabludov in 1618 as protopop of Zabludov, Podlasie, Grodno, Podhajec, ihumen of Mielec, and patriarchal exarch of the Kiev metropolis.
