Abstract

In the 570s, two abbots, Nanctus and Donatus (the latter along with 70 monks), independently arrived in Visigothic Spain. Their journey can likely be regarded as an example of a broader migration from African territories to the Iberian Peninsula during this period. This article analyses the situation in the African Praetorian Prefecture through the lens of the religious policies of Justin II and the rebellion of the Moorish king Garmul, which may have been direct causes of the transfer of monastic life between these regions.
