Abstract

This article examines the state of threat on the south-eastern border of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the early years of the Russo-Austro-Turkish War (1787–1792) as reflected in manuscript newspapers. The nature of these newspaper reports contributed to the creation of a distinct media reality. They depicted the threat posed by Turkish forces (and later also by Russian and Austrian troops), which was not always real, yet influenced the sentiments of the noble public opinion. As a result, concerns arose regarding border security and the expansion of the military establishment, as well as discussions on the presence of foreign troops within the borders of the Commonwealth.
