Abstract

The events that took place in Poland in October 1956 brought about a number of significant changes in the political system of the Polish People’s Republic. As a result, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński returned to the execution of his ecclesial functions. It happened on the terms of the Primate who forced the authorities to meet his demands. During the following months of the political breakthrough of 1956-1957, Cardinal Wyszyński showed a great sense of analysis of the socio-political sphere and a sense of reality in which he had to act. He put order in the internal situation of the Church and provided it with the opportunity to act autonomously; he outlined priorities for the coming years and was not deceived by the authorities' false declarations.
