Abstract

Tadeusz Rejtan's protest at the first Partition Sejm has been described before, but many details still require clarification. The focus is not so much on refining the facts as it is on pointing out nuances that will provide a fuller spectrum of how different political stances were taken by the elites of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in response to various crisis situations. This, in turn, will allow for determining the moral and ethical condition of the Polish elites during the Stanislavian period, not just the most important figures in the political scene but also the middle nobility who largely held senatorial or parliamentary positions. How should we interpret their actions and classify their stances? Finding the right approach to evaluation will uncover why, if almost everyone is in favour, the option represented by a decisive minority prevails. This is not just about the first partition; it serves as an example through which citizens' attitudes are revealed.
