Abstract

This article examines the decoration of Cistercian manuscript codices in Poland up to the end of the 15th century, in relation to the restrictions introduced by St. Bernard of Clairvaux. It demonstrates that, despite the General Chapter’s initially negative stance toward the art of illumination, such decoration was nevertheless present—albeit to varying degrees—in handwritten books. The article highlights common themes found in miniatures across both sacred and secular codices and discusses their value as archival and historical sources.
