Abstract

Poles living in Austria, especially in Vienna, are an outstanding Polish community abroad. It may be surprising then that they are not a subject eagerly taken up by literary authors. Well-known writers who write about them include Radek Knapp (1964-). Another character worthy of interest is Adam Zieliński (1929-2010), who comes from the Kresy (the Borderlands). He begins his writing career late – when he retired. In novels and stories he presents Vienna, in which he settled in the late 1950s, including Poles living there. Reviewers of his works praise him for being a keen observer who included his thoughts in vividly written works. Zieliński, presenting the Polish community in Vienna, indicates its beginning, i.e. the 1980s, and the economic nature. In the opinion of this community, he is inconsistent – on the one hand, he criticizes it, points out numerous vices and, as a consequence, he distances himself from it, on the other, he expects to be recognized as its prominent representative.
