  • Stipe Buzar: “Do the Weak Have a Right to Fight the Strong? Moral Absolutes and the Probability of Success”
  • The article deals with the issue of just war and discusses the conditions that a war must meet in order to be considered just. The “jus ad bellum” requirement concerning the probability of success can be seen as an unjust requirement that prohibits the weaker party in a potential or actual armed conflict from resorting to organized violence, even for the purpose of defending and protecting its own survival. However, the view that the likelihood of success is an unjust requirement should only be accepted if: (1) the weaker state's goal is mere survival. If condition (1) is met, this requirement must be considered invalid. On the other hand, if: (2) survival is not considered an overriding factor, the requirement remains in force. This article discusses the latter position using the example of the famous Melian dialogue from Thucydides' “The Peloponnesian War” and relates it to the question of Ukraine's right to war and the possible moral obligation of its government to negotiate in the current defensive war against Russia.
