Theology of fasting in the asceticism and mysticism of Blessed Dorothy of Great Montau

Abstract

Blessed Dorothy of Great Montau (1347-1394) was one of the most outstanding fasting woman’s figures of medieval and early modern Europe. The subject of this article is the theology of Dorothy’s fasting, as described by a professor of theology in Prague, dean of the Pomesanian cathedral chapter, Master John of Kwidzyn OT (1343-1417), supported by the provost of the cathedral chapter, then bishop of Pomesania, Master John II Ryman OT (14th/15th century). An analysis of the fasting practice across the life of these Blessed, based on printed sources, leads to the determination of the course and effects of this spiritual exercise in the context of correlative exercises on the path of purification (Greek: πρακτική), enlightenment (Greek: φυςική), and unification (Greek: θεολογική), of selected representatives of the ascetic tradition of the desert.
