Abstract

This article examines the various roles and responsibilities held by the laity within the parish structures of Sacré-Cœur de Léré in the Diocese of Pala, Chad. The author highlights, on the one hand, the dynamism of the laity in pastoral, liturgical and catechetical work, community governance and participation in parish councils, social ministry and the care of the sick, etc. On the other hand, he identifies the ills that undermine, or at least the challenges faced by these laypeople: the resort to witchcraft, the practice of polygamy and traditional initiation rites, alcohol abuse, lack of training, and material poverty. In the light of the Magisterium of the Church, notably Lumen Gentium, Gaudium et Spes, Ad Gentes, Apostolicam Actuositatem, Christifideles Laici, Evangelii Nuntiandi, Africae Munus and other texts from the Diocese of Pala, the author offers avenues for revitalising the role and authentic, effective participation of the laity through integral formation that incorporates local cultural values, through co-responsibility based on the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity, through an authentic Christian lifestyle and witness, and through a renewal of evangelisation in the parish in light of the current social context.
