Abstract

The earliest account of the institution of the Eucharist comes from the First Letter to the Corinthians. In the same letter, Paul refers several times to the practice of celebrating the Lord’s supper in the community. It turns out that the praxis of the celebration of the Lord’s supper deviates from the picture that emerges when reading the account of the institution of the Eucharist and the theological conclusions that follow from this reading. The author of this article seeks to show how abuses in the celebration of the Lord’s supper affect the community of Christ’s followers in Corinth and its individual believers. The question of the celebration of the Lord’s supper, which was combined with feasts called agapē, proves to be particularly relevant in this context.
