Abstract

In 1 Cor 5:1 Paul refers to a scandal in the Corinthian community, a Christian living with his stepmother. Such a situation was indeed condemned in Greek and Roman sources, even if it was supposed to happen only occasionally. The women, rather than men, were considered guilty of it. The tolerance shown by the Corinthian community could possibly be explained by cases in which such a relation was justified by special circumstances. The best example we know about is the marriage between Antiochus I and his stepmother Stratonice, as described in Appian, Historia Romana XI.10.59–61 (cf. Plutarchus, Demetrius 38; earlier Sophocles, Trachiniae 1221–1229).
