Abstract

The article examines the nature, characteristics, and mechanisms of disinformation through an interdisciplinary approach, anchoring its analysis in moral theology while simultaneously employing concepts and methods from the social sciences, particularly media and communication studies. Using contextual analysis, historical-critical analysis, and research-desk approach, and drawing on specialized literature in theology and the social sciences, as well as empirical data from reports by international research institutions, the study presents disinformation as a tool of destabilization and societal polarization, as well as an act that bears the hallmarks of sin. This leads to the conclusion that countering disinformation requires both media education and moral formation, aimed at promoting truth as the foundation of an orderly society, operating in the spirit of communio personarum. In fulfilling this task, the Church can and should play a major role.
