Abstract

This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the convening of the Council of Nicaea by Emperor Constantine the Great. Unfortunately, the convocation letter, in which the ruler should have indicated the reason or reasons why the bishops were to meet for a joint session, has not survived. These reasons were related to, although they did not have to be identical with, the expectations of the aforementioned emperor towards the clergy gathered at his invitation in Nicaea, as the reasons for transferring the meeting from Ancyra to Nicaea, officially given in the imperial letter, seem to prove. In this article, based on an analysis of sources, an attempt is made to reconstruct these expectations.
