Abstract

The article presents the results of quantitative empirical research on how contemporary security threats are perceived and prioritized among young people. The research was conducted on a sample of 1,252 high school graduates from Bydgoszcz high schools in 2018/2019 and 2022/2023. The similar size of the groups of respondents taking part in the study in individual years allowed for a comparative analysis. Its cognitive value results from the fact that the time separating the measurements in both groups was associated with the emergence and intensification of many threats with a global impact. These include the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic, Russia's aggression against Ukraine, and the intensification of the environmental crisis. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that the surveyed youth perceive and consider the greatest risks that are currently most present in the public debate and exposed in the mass media in connection with current events. In both surveyed groups, war was considered the greatest threat to security; the importance of ecological threats was growing in the awareness of young people, while the initially high concern about acts of terrorism was decreasing.
