Abstract

The article consists of three parts: the first one is devoted to the causes and beginnings of the Reformation in Poland in the 1620s; the second shows the climax of the Reformation movement in the 1660s-70s; and the third depicts its twilight in the last decades of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century.  The reasons for the Reformation in Poland were similar to those in other European countries and related to the crisis in the Catholic Church. In turn, the causes of the collapse of the Reformation in Poland were manifold.  The weakness of the Polish Reformation and probably the main reason for its decline and fall was the fact that it did not cover evenly all the estates. The Polish Reformation was primarily a reformation of the gentry.
