Abstract

In his dealings with the communist authorities, the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, had to take into account the position of the Holy See during the pontificate of Pope Paul VI which focused on dialogue with communist countries. Tensions between the Primate of Poland and the diplomacy of the Holy See often arose against this background. They resulted from both a different assessment of the situation of the Church in Poland and consideration of the broader international context. The authority of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński and the trust Paul VI had in him allowed them to find compromise solutions, significantly modifying the original assumptions of the Vatican. This proved beneficial to both the Church in Poland and the effectiveness of the Holy See.
