Abstract

After 1956, cooperation was established between Polish and Slovak Catholics, under which Poles provided various forms of help to the persecuted Church in communist Czechoslovakia. This action consisted primarily in the transfer of banned religious literature, information, and the clandestine ordination of priests. A significant role was played by the Slovak ecclesiastical emigration headed by Bishop Pavel Hnilica. Hnilica was forbidden to enter Czechoslovakia. However, until 1978 he regularly came to Poland to personally organize transfer channels to his country and met representatives of the Slovak clandestine Church and young Slovaks in the oases of the Light-Life Movement. He established close cooperation with Polish bishops and priests, especially with the Cardinals: Wyszyński and Wojtyła.
