Abstract

The Polish priest and canon of Smoleńsk, Ignacy Hrebnicki, came from a Lithuanian noble family. He left an interesting historical legacy in the form of a travel diary from the years 1788-1790. Clergy from the territories of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth often wrote accounts of their travels to the general chapters of their religious congregations. However, Hrebnicki's travel diary has a different character. It records the journey to Rome and includes references to the cult of the martyr Andrzej Bobola. Hrebnicki held great reverence for this deceased Jesuit and sought the Pope's approval for his beatification. In his diary, Hrebnicki emphasized his numerous initiatives to promote the cult of this martyr during the journey. He wrote poems and prayers in his honour and distributed pictures with his image.
