Abstract

The article is a presentation of the public activity of Jan Magnus Tęczyński (1579-1637), the voivode of Krakow and the last Senator of the Tęczyński family. It argues that after a long period of studies, travelling abroad, and serving in the imperial army, in1605 he started public activity. In 1605-1620 he held the office of the Queen's cupbearer. Between 1606 and 1611, he commanded military troops set up at his own expense. In 1620 he was appointed the voivode of Krakow, which allowed him to be active in the Senate. Around 1623 he joined the opposition to the king. He was one of the most important Senators of the second and third decades of the 17th century. He owned a large estate, which allowed him to make several significant foundations.
