From the first days of the Polish-Ukrainian war of 1918/19, the Polish command began to form troops whose task was to protect the rear of the front area. Formed almost exclusively of volunteers, always overshadowed by line troops, in the first phase of the war, they played a key role in securing the facilities of Polish troops, protecting railway lines, including the most critical and important for the fate of the conflict railway connecting Lviv with Przemyśl, which was used to send supplies to the city besieged by the Ukrainians. In the spring and summer of 1919, during the decisive battles, they secured war trophies, manned captured towns, and helped organize the front lines.
