Abstract

The actions of the French state administration related to the seizure and subsequent management of Templar properties during the trial that led to the dissolution of the order have not yet been the subject of thorough analysis. However, the surviving sources - though scattered and fragmentary - make it possible to identify certain challenges faced by Philip the Fair and his officials, which influenced the ultimate financial outcome of this large-scale undertaking. A closer examination of these issues raises further questions about the true motives behind the French monarch’s actions against the Templars - an issue that remains unresolved in scholarly research.
