Abstract

The article deals with the issue of cultural-historical and artistic values of the church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Gdynia. This church is one of the first churches built after the war in Gdynia. It is a testimony to the faith and determination of the parish priest Father Hilar Jastak, the parishioners and inhabitants of the city. The church was built despite the harassment of the then communist authorities as a votive offering on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland. It is the work of outstanding architects: Prof. Jan Borowski and Prof. Leopold Taraszkiewicz, who gave it a monumental, modernist character. The decoration of the church is also very valuable in artistic terms, which is largely due to the magnificent mosaics by the Gdansk sculptor Boguslaw Marshal. The church is a witness to important historical events. Here is the Chapel of Shipyard Workers, Port Workers  and People of the Sea, where memorabilia of the drama of December 1970 and  August 1980 are stored. All this led to the inclusion of the church in the register of monuments in 2015. Then began conservation work aimed at restoring the original beauty of this famous sanctuary called the “Pearl of Gdynia Modernism”.
