Abstract

The literature on the intellectual achievements of Charles Linnaeus (1707-1778) considers his influence on the development of  science in two ways. According to the first, Linnaeus was a solitary genius who single-handedly reformed the taxonomy of the natural sciences. A second interpretation, in addition to the naturalist’s prominent contributions, considers other key figures of the eighteenth-century natural history. This article examines the assumptions of the two interpretations: Linnaeus-as-a-Researcher and Linnaeus-as-a-Developer-of-a-Research-Style, and considers whether they provide a complementary picture of the development of the naturalist’s research practice. For this purpose, the discussion relies on Ludwik Fleck’s notion of a thought collective, which consists of two circles, esoteric and exoteric.
