DESCRIPTION: The author of the text is Prof. Anna Latawiec, a long-time employee of the Faculty of Philosophy and Law at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, vice-dean and dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Law, mainly dealing with natural philosophy and the theory of information and simulation. For many years, she was also a member of the editorial board of SPCh, serving as secretary, deputy editor-in-chief, and then editor-in-chief for nearly 25 years. In an interview conducted in 2021, she said: "I am a philosopher of nature because, in my attempt to understand the natural environment, I start with natural knowledge and then try to get to the essence of the structures of living organisms, to the essence of their functioning. Of course, I use philosophical methods in my research, but it is essential to take into account the scientific and natural picture of the world. (...) As a philosopher of nature, I am particularly interested in the mystery of life, and therefore in the philosophy of animate nature. To a certain extent, the natural sciences provide me with information on this subject. I am primarily interested in the phenomenon of life, its manifestations, but my aim is to get to its essence (...). In my opinion, the greatest threat today is a lack of knowledge, or rather a lack of reliable knowledge. (...) We are now an information society. Information reaches us at a tremendous pace and there is no time to verify it. As a result, information can be inaccurate, unreliable, incomplete and often becomes a source of manipulation. No wonder that knowledge built on it is sometimes simply false. Therefore, our challenge is, first and foremost, to convey reliable scientific knowledge about the world (as far as possible) so that its image is as true as possible and adequate to human cognitive abilities" (Dwie Anny i filozofia, Liber Libri 2021). The article in question concerns the issue of AI, which is very topical today, but at the time was only considered theoretically. In it, the author presented the meaning of the concepts of information, simulation and artificial intelligence at a technical and biological level. "AI is sometimes treated as an element of metaphysical responsibility for the progress of evolution. Even beyond the knowledge of brain anatomy and physiology, one can seek answers to the question of the possibility of simulating intelligent behaviour. We will also be interested in this possibility in relation to the animal world. If a participant in an experiment, in contact with a computer (animal), comes to believe that their interlocutor is also a human being, we consider the programme to be a living model of human behaviour. Reflections on artificial intelligence force us to tackle difficult issues in the field of thinking, but also to define the concepts of intellect, intelligence and thinking. It is possible to grasp the essence of these concepts when we realise the interdisciplinary nature of research on artificial intelligence and the multifaceted approaches to the issue in question" (p. 46).
