DESCRIPTION: Gerhard Zecha (born 1942) is an Austrian professor of philosophy. He was associated with the University of Salzburg. He is currently retired. Zecha's academic interests focus on the philosophy of values, social philosophy, the theory of social sciences and humanities, the philosophy of education, and the didactics of philosophy. His thorough, critical and constructive analyses are based on the solid scientific and theoretical foundations of Karl Popper and on his skilful use of logic in the field of normative theory and values. (for more information, see https://www.plus.ac.at/philosophie-gw-fakultaet/der-fachbereich-2/personal/gerhard-zecha/). In 1987, the Polish Philosophical Society published his text entitled Rozważania dotyczące pojęcia krytyki naukowej (Reflections on the Concept of Scientific Criticism, translated by Prof. E. Nieznański). The text is a record of a lecture given at the Faculty of Philosophy and Law of the Catholic University of Lublin. The text is accompanied by a record of the discussion, authored by Tomasz Olszewski (https://bazhum.muzhp.pl/media/texts/studia-philosophiae-christianae/1987-tom-23-numer-2/studia_philosophiae_christianae-r1987-t23-n2-s214-215.pdf), which took place after Prof. Zecha's lecture and was attended by WFCh staff. "When reviewing actual and intended criticism, it becomes apparent that a wide variety of critical practices are used. They range from ignoring known views, through inventing ironic and cynical remarks, to a well-thought-out discussion and, in the ideal case, to pointing out some empirical or logical contradiction. It is impossible to define a uniformly used concept of criticism or a uniformly applied technique of criticism. In any case, it would be informative to draw up a list of different concepts of criticism and to cite relevant examples of criticism” (pp. 209–210). “Responding to the issues raised by E. Nieznański, G. Zech stated that what he presented in his paper was merely a proposal for a strategy of scientific criticism, not a theory of such criticism” (p. 214).
