PROF. ANNA LATAWIEC – LONG-TIME EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF SPCh
- In 1996, following the death of Rev. Prof. Szczepan W. Ślaga, Prof. Anna Latawiec took over as editor-in-chief of SPCh. She held this position for nearly 25 years, until 2020. Anna Latawiec is a professor of humanities, former vice-dean and dean of the Faculty of Christian Philosophy at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. She is currently retired. She has been associated with the editorial office of SPCh since 1981, when she became editorial secretary and then deputy editor-in-chief. She is currently an honorary member of the Scientific Council of SPCh. She has also published over 30 of her own texts (articles and reviews) in SPCh. She has conducted research in the fields of philosophy of nature, philosophy of medicine, ecology and eco-philosophy, and philosophy of science. In particular, she has addressed issues related to biological information, philosophical issues of simulation and modelling, diagnosis in medicine, bioethical issues, loneliness, illness and human death. She is the author and co-author of six monographs, nearly 150 articles in scientific journals, chapters in monographs, dictionary entries and reviews, and co-editor of several collective works. She recalls the beginnings of her work at the SPCh editorial office: "In the beginning, we typed on a typewriter. There could only be three errors or author's corrections on one page of the typescript sent to the printer. So when there were more, we had to retype those pages. Then computers and subsequent versions of the Word word processing programme appeared. We also had to learn how to adjust the text. No one ever taught us this, so we tried to master it ourselves. And since it is difficult to do something without understanding it, my brother, a journalist, arranged for us to meet his colleague, who taught us the basics of editorial work. Over time, our older colleagues in the editorial office started to assign these tasks to us because we were the best at them. The most time-consuming task was creating tables in which we had to count the number of letters, syllables, spaces, etc. in each text. For each author. These numbers could not exceed the required numbers on the page, in the entire text, or in the entire issue. (A. Świeżyński, Filozofia wolna od uprzedzeń. 60 lat czasopisma filozoficznego „Studia Philosophiae Christianae” [A Philosophy Free of Prejudice. 60 Years of the Philosophical Journal Studia Philosophiae Christianae], SPCh 61(1)17-18). She said of her predecessor as editor-in-chief, Szczepan Śladze: "I was impressed by his discipline, orderliness and reliability. It was he who drew me into the editorial work of our faculty journal (...). Over time, Ania Lemańska joined us, and for a good dozen or so years we were the editorial secretaries" (Dwie Anny i filozofia, p. 110).
