Abstract

The 10th paragraph of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council mentions the common priesthood of all the baptized. Jesus Christ carries out his salvific work in the world through the People of God. Coming into the world, he revealed his mission: prophetic, priestly and king. Everyone is involved in this mission and everyone is called to actively participate in it. All the faithful share in Christ’s mission, but there are different degrees and ways of participating. There is an essential difference between the hierarchical priesthood and the common priesthood. However, there is a close relationship between the two. The hierarchical priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. Lay people who are grafted onto Christ through Baptism thus share in his mission: prophetic, priestly and kingly. This gives them the right to receive from the holy shepherds the means of grace that Christ bestows upon his Church. Taking advantage of the sacramental grace, the People of God actively participates in the work of salvation, giving in the world a testimony of belonging to Jesus Christ.
