Abstract

Tadeusz Gogolewski, as an apologist and successor of W. Kwiatkowski, used the methodology developed by his predecessor. He described the Catholic faith based on historical data. Characterized its features during the Reformation, and then in the four centuries after the Council of Trent based on analyses of the reception of the Roman Catechism, the writings of A.F. Modrzewski and the apologetics of J.S. Drey. His analysis is enriched in this article by reaching for newer historical studies. The outbreak of the Reformation prompted the Church to specify the Catholic faith in such a way as to emphasize its differences from Protestant approaches. It gave rise to violent confessional disputes within Christianity, which lasted for four centuries and – in fact – brought much harm to the evangelizing mission, the effectiveness of which Christ makes dependent on the unity of His followers. The post Tridentine centuries were full of intra-Christian disputes and polemics. That was not until the Second Vatican Council, whose sessions T. Gogolewski observed during his studies in Rome (1958-1964). The Council changed confrontational treatment of faith and emphasized that faith is a gift from God, who is the Unity of Persons and an obligation to be an instrument of reconciliation of people with God, and also people among themselves.
