Abstract

The history of the Christianization of the New World is usually identified with a brutal conquest. Less known is the theme of the missionaries’ various efforts to expose and appreciate the dignity and subjectivity of the Indians. Despite the unfavorable political and social conditions of the time, this task was also undertaken by bishops and numerous theologians. Thanks to their decisive interventions at the royal courts, as well as at the papal court, it was possible to develop laws aimed at respecting the personal dignity of the Indians. The subjective treatment of the Indians was also an element of divagation in relation to adequate methods of missionary and evangelization in the New World.
