Abstract

The article addresses the issue of young re-emigrants returning to Poland and their functioning within peer environments in the context of re-acculturation. Its aim is to present how young people function in peer relationships after re-emigration and to show how they experience reverse culture shock and the feeling of living between two cultures. The research was qualitative in nature and conducted using semi-structured individual interviews focused on the research problem. The analysis included narratives of three young people returning from the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States. The findings indicate that the peer environment is one of the key areas in which readaptation difficulties become visible. The participants experienced social distance, stigmatisation, communication problems, and difficulties in rebuilding their sense of identity. Mechanisms of labelling and the limited possibility of using competencies acquired abroad proved particularly significant. The analysis demonstrates that the course of re-acculturation is strongly dependent on the quality of peer relationships and the level of social support. The findings highlight the need to develop support measures for young re-emigrants within school and social environments.
