Abstract

The cardinals gathered at the conclave elected on May 8, 2025, the American Augustinian, Cardinal Robert Prevost, as the new pope. The article attempts to draw a parallel between the figure of St. Augustine and Pope Leo XIV. The course of life of the Founder of the
Order, including the external context, was also reflected in the experiences of the future pope. The coat of arms, episcopal motto, and the first statements of the new successor of St. Peter contain numerous references to the Bishop of ancient Hippo. Several issues important to St. Augustine can be identified, which also hold particular significance for the current pontificate. These include: life in community, concern for unity in the Church, service to the cause of peace, openness to the poor, courageous defense of the truth, and promotion of education
