Abstract

The article examines the role of stereotypes in the experiences of individuals with mental health issues and their impact on treatment-seeking behavior. The study is based on interviews with Recovery Assistants—individuals who have personally experienced a mental health crisis and now support others in recovery. Findings reveal that stereotypes often lead to stigmatization and social exclusion, hindering access to help. Recovery Assistants emphasize the need for a shift in public discourse towards acceptance, education, and the normalization of mental health conversations. The article suggests strategies to change this narrative and involving individuals with lived experiences in public dialogue.
