It is impossible to overestimate the value of prevention and its effectiveness in any aspect of every human’s life. The aim of this article - which is theoretical and empirical in its character - is to present the importance of preventive measures directed to parents as a form of protecting children from harm. The article contains a definition of prophylaxis, a brief outline of trends in contemporary prevention activities, a description of the role of parents in the difficult process of upbringing and protecting their children; it also illustrates parents' level of knowledge about child abuse prevention. The article touches upon what parents expect from specialized activities, how can they convert acquired skills into positive changes within the family and what are the most common reasons for using professional help. The opportunity to talk, exchange views, gain professional knowledge, aid and support, helps to quickly cope with crisis situations and shows the ways to restore the psychological balance of the parent, which is indispensable in the proper relations with the child. The presented paper describes
a direct positive effect of participation in preventive activities on the situation of families with small children. It presents the results of empirical research conducted among parents making use of the offer of the Dajemy Dzieciom Siłę Foundation.
