Abstract

Teaching BATNA and WATNA on EFL – English as a Foreign Language - programmes involves the development of students’ competence in a foreign language and the improvement of their negotiation skills and their ability to analyse cases. This article presents some techniques for teaching and evaluating BATNA and WATNA in an EFL Business Class. The author provides examples and explanations to illustrate the necessity of BATNA and WATNA preparation. This article also provides two case studies: the first on Education Incorporated – an educational institution aiming to develop on the international market, and the second on Emerald River - an importer of wine to Asian markets. Both cases were written by Alex Allen from the University of St Andrews, Scotland and Piotr Jednaszewski from St Mary’s Academy, Kirkcaldy, Scotland. What I am to provide in this article is the ideas for and an approximation of lesson staging of these presented case studies which can be used in the EFL classroom to practise negotiation skills, as well as to introduce students to and emphasise the importance of BATNA and WATNA.
