Abstract

The aim of the study was to describe the way in which adolescents understand the concept of health, what are the attributes of health and how they locate health among other values.

The group of the participants consisted in 276 adolescents aged between 17 and 19, 152 women and 124 men. Self-report rating scales were used in order to measure the attributes of health, the criteria defining health and the rank of health among other values.

Results indicate that for adolescents health is a basic and attainable value, but at the same time they consider it to be easy to lose and hard to regain. Cluster analysis revealed that some participants perceived health as stable and others as unstable. Moreover, adolescents generally used hedonistic and efficiency criteria in defining health and valued health highly, but below such values as love, friendship and intelligence.
