Abstract

This article is to indicate how and in which areas a theatrical performance can be used as an educational tool. Starting with the assumption that a play is not only entertainment, it is pointed out what other functions can be fulfilled by theatrical performances in early childhood education. The content of selected contemporary theatrical works shows that they not only deal with universal but also very up-to-date subjects, and many of them touch upon issues that, until recently, have been perceived as adult only; that they ask questions rather than give answers, encourage discussion rather than provide clear guidance. The presented examples of performances for children indicate that theatre may become a suitable material to introduce children to the world of values. Thanks to this, the theatre fits into the pedagogy of culture understood as value-based education and axiological pedagogy.
