The process of rehabilitation in prisons is extremely difficult due to the specificity of the prison institution itself and the very fact of social isolation of the persons involved. It is widely believed that its effectiveness depends primarily on the motivation of the convicted persons and the effectiveness and authenticity of the competences of prison service officers. The project "Rehabilitation and Socialization Together" implemented in the Investigative Detention Centre in Grójec External Branch in Stawiszyn is a novel program of social readaptation of persons serving a custodial sentence. The aim of the program is to arouse empathy in the inmates and rebuild self-esteem, respect and self-acceptance. Prisoners who care for animals have a substitute for freedom. Often for the first time in their lives they show feelings and notice that they are important to someone and the mere presence of animals makes them feel better and more needed, which can make it easier for them to return to normal life in society.
