Abstract

The first Polish school in Canada was set up in a parish established in 1875 for settlers from Polish Kashubia who came to the area of Barry's Bay. With the influx of Polish immigrants and the emergence of ethnic parishes to serve their needs, schools were established there: in 1894 in Kitchener, in 1901 in Winnipeg, in 1913 in Toronto (at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church), and in 1938 in Oshava. Before the outbreak of the Second World War in the province of Ontario, there were Polish schools in Thunder Bay (1933) and three in Hamilton (in 1927, 1936, and 1937). Other schools were established in Brandfort (1936), in Preston (1934), in Delhi (1939), in London (1927), in Sudbury (1936), in Brandford (1928), in Alberta (1913), in Montreal (1915), in Calgary (1934), where already at the beginning of the 20th century lived more than 7000 Poles.
