The article addresses the issue of the functioning of papal primacy over the Church in Antioch in the third century. It describes the controversy related to the theological errors and the legitimacy of the episcopate of Paul of Samosata, in which the Church in Rome played a decisive role. Based on the account of its course – taken from Eusebius of Caesarea – it appears that Emperor Aurelian entrusted the final judgment in this matter to the Bishop of Rome and his synod composed of the episcopate of Italy. In view of this, Pope Felix I resolved this disciplinary dispute in favor of Domnus’ successor, Timothy, and against Paul of Samosata. The article
attempts to create a synthetic vision of the issue formulated in the topic, while at the same time responding to certain counterarguments raised by other researchers who do not share this reading of historical facts.
