Abstract

Scientific research covers more and more areas of the socio-cultural world. One of them is Western esotericism. Conceptualized by some in terms of rejected knowledge, it is returning to the domain of science after centuries of exclusion, but this time as an area of research. As the literature on the subject indicates, it may seem that it is not just another subject to explore. The exclusion of esotericism seems to also affect the people who study it. On the other hand, however, the research area is becoming institutionalized, a new association bringing together researchers of esotericism is being established, and the number of publications and conferences is growing. In order to verify the attitudes of the academic community towards researchers exploring Western esotericism and alternative spirituality in the humanities and social sciences, a study was undertaken. The Polish scientists were asked questions about their experience of prejudice, depreciation, lower prestige, or difficulties in obtaining a research grant related to their domain of research. The article presents an analysis of the answers to the above presented questions.
