Abstract

T he aim of this article is to introduce the social thought of the Italian philosopher of culture, sociologist Franco Cassano. The author, best known for his Il pensiero meridiano, which has been published in Italian many times, is a figure worth popularizing in the circle of researchers of European social thought. His cultural-social analyses of the peculiarities of southern Italian culture, and in a broader sense of both the „southern” heritage of European culture, as well as his demonstration of the importance of cultural autonomies in the modern world, especially in the context of the processes of the emergence in the 1990s of a new European superstate, which is the European Union, seem extremely important. The discourse on the modernization of the periphery striving to copy the solutions of the center of geopolitical-cultural influence of Europe, and their rational contestation are the quintessence of this writing. In the text, I also invoke Cassano’s discourse with Albert Camus, and co-modernize the issue with a number of scholars who see the right to cultural autonomy as an inalienable asset of a Europe united in diversity. David Marquand’s analyses of Nathaniel Copsey, as well as those of Adrian Favell and Virginie Guiraudon, are cited as cautionary tales. On the other hand, on the Polish ground Krzysztof Jasiecki, in my opinion, makes similar generalizations of the geopolitical situation in the European Union, that undergoes institutional development. He articulates an interesting perspective in the discourse on the limits of autonomy and cultural assimilation in Europe.
