Abstract

T he aim of the article is to analyze the diversity of social ministry of the Catholic Church (CC) based on the case of the Jubilee Year event. Specificity of the Jubilee Year is based on two pillars i.e. the event universality and its anchoring in the Catholic Church tradition. Such an activity of the CC, offered to both believers and non-believers, was an evange lization tool for the whole society. Therefore, the Jubilee Year was a vital issue that needed sociological analysis, which can be a development factor for the social doctrine of the Church. The sociological analysis included qualitative and quantitative research conducted among Poles and foreign pilgrims during. the World Youth Days (WYD) in Krakow held in 2016. The event was one of the highlights of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. The study concerned social and cultural dimensions, including universality and impact of the celebration on young people. The research shows, that in addition to the religious aspect, the World Youth Days influenced the perception of Poland in the world. Polish people were able to feel fraternity and, in general, it was an important social event for them. Analysis also touched upon the CC’s activities during the Jubilee, in the field of network society and socially excluded groups. The analysis shows that the Catholic Church, including the body language and gestures of Pope Francis, reaches out in its activities to meet various social needs – welcoming each person into a supportive, non-judgmental and open community.
