Mobile applications as a new form of social and religious communication

Abstract

In the twentieth century, the main challenge for the Church – in the field of communication and media – was the need to convert religious content on such media as television, radio, Internet. Today, in the context of the Internet and mobile devices that are used every day, there are new challenges for the Church associa-ted with mobile applications. This article attempts to answer the questions: What is the content of selected mobile catholic applications? In what form the religious content is presented in them? What functions do catholic mobile applications have? What kind of definition of the religious mobile application can be pro-posed? What kind of meaning do they have for contemporary social and religious communication? What kind of suggestions and guidelines can be proposed for the creators of religious mobile applications? In order to answer those questions and realize the above assumptions, the review and analysis of the literature and available research reports were done, then the analysis of the content of selected religious applications and the participant observation (downloading by the author of this article the chosen mobile applications and using them). After the synthesis, the hypotheses verification was done, the conclusions were stated and proposals for further discussion and research were presented.
