Liquid Sacred in Postmodern Society

Janusz Mariański , Stanisław A. Wargacki

Abstract

The article attempts to examine the relationship between the sacred and culture in two realms, i.e., in thereal post-modern society, and in the virtual (digital) world. The study begins with an exploration of the verynotion of the sacred. According to the adopted hypothesis the sacred does not disappear under the con-ditions of growing secularization in postmodern societies, but takes on new diverse forms. The postmodernsacred dynamically advances to new frontiers of human activities, and one of them is cyberspace. Especiallyin perspective of the fluidity and unpredictability of modern societies liquid religiosity and the liquid sacredmay tend to undergo further metamorphosis and deregulation. Indeed, market for religion and for spiri-tuality, including the liquid sacred is still considerable. Thus, Christian churches are facing a great oppor-tunity to be part of these new developments in the sphere of sacred.
