Abstract

People who are active professionally experience many difficulties related to combining their professional and family roles. The situation of working women is special because, stereotypically, they are obliged to take care of children, and it is a common opinion in the community that career cannot be at the expense of the family. A complicated nature of combining the roles plus the structural and cultural conflict, places the problems related thereto on polar opposites –from deactivation of women on the labour market to taking fewer decisions to procreate. However, there are many women who urge to combine both roles and have both their professional life and family life. In legal terms, the tools related to the rights of the employees being parents and regulations regarding flexible forms of employment, and in institutional terms the ones related to ensuring child care when their parent are at work -are helpful to solve these issues. Also the views on the division of roles and duties in the family are important. This paper is an attempt to present instruments that facilitate women to combine their professional work and family duties making use of the existing institutional and legal solutions.
