New fatherhood or crisis of fatherhood? The father’s role transformation in the family

Joanna Wróblewska-Skrzek

Abstract

The aim of this article is the reflection on the father’s role transformation in the context of the ongoing mental and moral transition. Contemporary fatherhood is defined in the text in terms social construct or a social institution, which is associated with a specific group of tasks, standards and expectations addressed to men. In this context, the issues of the modern fatherhood are analyzed in terms of “a new involved fatherhood” as well as in terms of the crisis of the fatherhood. The traditional functions of the father and their historical and cultural evaluation are also presented. While referring to the existing research, discrepancies between expectations of the father function and their social practice have been indicated.
