The strength of elderly people’s family ties

Marta Luty-Michalak

Abstract

The article is an attempt at a description of strength of ties between generations in the family from the per-spective of older people, excluding issues related to the provision of assistance and care towards elderly. The point of departure in the paper is the synthetic analysis of the two theoretical positions expressed by Margaret Mead and Alvin Toffler. M. Mead in her description of the prefigurative culture and the phenomenon of intergenerational gap expressed the conviction that elderly people were pushed to the margins of social life. A. Toffler describing third wave societies also referred to the process of their ageing stating that it will lead to a greater focus on the needs of older people. Empirical verification of the above statements is based on the analysis of the results of the national, sociological surveys carried out by Jerzy Piotrowski, Polish Society of Gerontology and PolSenior survey.
