Energy and electricity in sociological thought

Joanna M. Leszczyńska

Abstract

Sociology has been addressing the issue of energy for several decades. Scholars analyze the electric current without separating it from other energy carriers. Meanwhile, its constitutive character for contemporary culture and economy indicates the need to open a new research field dedicated exclusively to it. Civilization dependent on electric power supply cannot forego the sociology of electricity. Limited, so far, sociological interest in electricity covers mainly reflection on blackouts (temporary power shortages for large groups of consumers) and on electrification – past and present. As a cultural necessity, the electric current seems to demand more sociology’s interest. The objective of this paper is to present the hitherto sociological reflection on energy and electricity and to draw attention to the possibility of the electric current consideration in terms of the cultural system, so in the perspective proposed by the British sociologist, Margaret S. Archer.
