Loyalty, criticism and parting in relations between Poles and political parties

Paweł Matuszewski

Abstract

There are three questions posed in the article. The first one concerns the issue of how loyal are the voters of Polish political parties. The second one investigates how the discrepancy between the individual’s left/right orientation and the perceived political position of the party are associated with the strategies of loyalty, voice and exit. The last question is about how these mechanisms affect the contemporary political situation. Based on the concept of Albert Hirschman voters have been divided into three categories: a) always voting for the same alternative and not critical (loyalty), b) voters critical of the party of their choice (voice) c) voters who change their decision (exit). The analysis was carried out on the basis of the data of the Polish General Election Study 2011. The results show that Polish voters are relatively poorly attached to the party they vote for. Along with the increasing ideological distance grew the probability of applying an exit strategy. Detailed analysis has also shown that the mechanism of exit among centrist, centre-left and centre-right voters and loyalty of right voters was present in the 2011 Polish parliamentary elections.
